International trade leader awarded an MBE

Allen Matty, who has spearheaded international trade in the West Midlands, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year honours for services to international trade.

Mr Matty, managing director of West Midlands Chambers of Commerce LLP (WMCC), delivers services for the Department for International Trade (DIT) in the region as part of his remit.

Louise Bennett, chief executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce who chairs the WMCC, said: “I’m delighted that Allen has received this award. It is richly deserved for someone who has been outstanding in his support of international trade emanating from the West Midlands.”

Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “It is testimony talleno Allen’s efforts that he has been among the people who have ensured that the West Midlands remains the third largest exporting region in the country with 10.4 per cent of total overseas sales.”

Mr Matty (pictured) said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be recognised for a career which has been so fantastically rewarding. The real reward has been in helping so many businesses grow internationally and for us to be among the best-performing regions in the country. None of this would have been possible without the help of the amazingly talented people I have worked with over the years.”

Mr Matty, aged 52, has more than 35 years’ international trade experience in sales and senior management roles involving the supply of industrial products worldwide and the delivery of international trade services in the West Midlands.

His entire career has been devoted to selling British products overseas and roles helping West Midlands businesses to successfully export worldwide.

His commercial experience in international markets focused on the Gulf States, where he lived for two years, together with considerable experience of operating in Scandinavian markets.

Over the years, Allen has supported many local businesses where he has given his time, knowledge and experience, directly mentoring companies on their export journey, playing a pivotal role in supporting their success. Allen’s advice, creativity, drive and determination has ultimately led to several West Midlands organisations achieving the Queens Award for International Trade.

Mr Matty continues to ensure that businesses in the West Midlands are supported with valuable advice on international trade matters, building a 60 strong regional team.

In April 2007, he joined West Midlands International Trade LLP, a partnership of the six regional Chambers of Commerce, as operations director, responsible for performance and change management together with responsibility for the delivery of UK Trade & Investment (now DIT) services in the region.

In 2010, he was appointed to managing director, West Midlands Chambers of Commerce LLP, where he led the organisation’s subsidiary LLP, West Midlands International Trade, to bid for and win two successive UKTI delivery contracts in 2011-15 and again in 2015-20

Mr Matty has overall responsibility for the DIT’s West Midlands delivery partner, including a network of 38 international trade advisers and through his leadership his team provides more than 3,500 businesses annually with support and advice on international trade matters, which in 2015/16 led to in excess of £792m additional export sales growth for businesses in the West Midlands region.
